Joy of teacher from Holguin for additional payment

Estrella Rodríguez Consuegra is a teacher from Holguin that has been teaching for more than 50 years, and reinstated after having retired in 2007, who now has been benefited, like several other educators throughout the country, with Resolution 23⁄2023 of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, published in the Official Gazette No.92 Extraordinary of 2023, which establishes the additional monthly payment for years of work.

Due to the economic reorganization implemented in the country this salary increase was eliminated in December 2020; however, in January of this year it was resumed in response to the claims made by the workers of the educational sector.Noel Jorge Pérez González, Human Resources officer of the Provincial Directorate of Education in Holguín, explained that this measure favored more than 30 thousand workers in the province, of which approximately 21 thousand are teachers and the rest are non-teaching personnel, who were not benefited with this type of payment before.

After this salary incentive, 603 workers were incorporated to the sector in the first two months of the year, of which 374 are teachers and 209 retirees who decided to be reinstated. Despite this, the expected impact to reduce the exodus of educators was not achieved, added Pérez González.

Likewise, Resolution 10/2024 of the Official Gazette No. 9 Extraordinary of 2024 updated the procedure for the additional payment for the increase in the teaching workload and the teacher-student ratio, in accordance with the current educational situation and the adjustments in the amounts derived from the salary reform in the sector.

Estrella Rodríguez commented that she has also been favored with this additional payment because she teaches different subjects such as Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Spanish Language to several groups to make up for the absence of other teachers.

“The salary increase has been remarkable as it has improved my economy. This measure should have been implemented earlier because many abandoned the job due to economic issues,” he added.

Despite the positive impact of these measures, there are still disagreements, especially among graduates, who are at a disadvantage in terms of salary compared to more experienced workers.

The young people are the relief that we need to prepare. We have to give them the possibility to motivate them for the profession, taking them into account with some benefit. Most of them choose to migrate to another sector where they can generate more income, suggested M.Sc. Madelaine Cruz Pupo, General Coordinator of the Hilda María Torres Bacallao elementary school.

Although three months have passed since the salary increase for the Education sector was implemented, there are still actions to be carried out to perfect this measure in order to satisfy the needs of the sector.
