Cachorros bit the Piratas four times

Effective relief pitching and abundant and productive offense were the mainstay of the victory this Sunday, 10×4, of the Holguin Cachorros over the Piratas of La Isla, whom they defeated in four of the five games played at General Calixto Garcia stadium as part of the 63rd season of Cuban baseball.

After the early start of starter José Manuel Rivas, five hits and three runs, two earned ones in one inning, the performance of rescuers Jesús Quintán (2-0), winner, Ramiro Rodríguez and José Antonio Sánchez, who deserved his third save, proved to be accurate.Quintán allowed only one run in four innings in which he was hit by four singles, struck out two and a deadball, Rodríguez was scoreless in two innings, while Sánchez closed the last two innings at a high level without allowing runs, with two singles, two strikeouts and a walk.

The sqaud of Holguin, that made two errors, displayed a 13-hit offensive led by Nelson Batista, with a homerun, a home run with bases loaded and five RBIs, Cristian Onofre, 4-3, with a triple and a run batted in, Luis Miguel Santiesteban, 3-2 and two RBIs, and Adriel Hechavarría, 6-2 and a run batted in.

The islanders failed once on defense and hit twelve hits, to which José Luis Bring, Dainier Gálvez and Alexander Almarales, with a double, contributed two each, the only run of his team.

The setback went to left-handed starter Dorvis Navarro (1-4) who, in four innings of work, gave up seven hits and seven clean runs.

On Sunday, the victory of Pinar del Río and the defeat of Ciego de Ávila combined to produce a tie in the leadership of the Cuban baseball tournament.

The Vegueros, with a 9×5 score, signed their fourth success in a row against Camagüey and the same streak was completed by Industriales against the Tigres, with a comfortable 13×5 triumph.

In the only sub-series defined this Sunday, Granma knocked out Matanzas in seven innings 13×3, with home runs by Pedro Almeida and the ninth by Alfredo Despaigne and complete work by left-hander Leandro Martínez, who has three hits in the campaign and reached 95 in his career.

The Guantanamo Indios saved the honor by defeating Sancti Spíritus 9×2, and Cienfuegos did the same by defeating Las Tunas with a 6×5 victory.

The conclusive date of the fifth particular games was completed with the successes of Villa Clara over Artemisa 4×3 and Santiago de Cuba, 10×5, against Mayabeque, with Danny Betancourt, leader in games won among active pitchers, with 165.

The standings are headed by Ciego de Avila and Pinar del Rio (16-6), followed by Industriales (15-7), Granma (13-9), Las Tunas (10-7), Camagüey (12-10), and Matanzas and Artemisa (11-11).

In the lower segment are Santiago de Cuba (10-12), La Isla (7-10), Sancti Spíritus, Mayabeque, Villa Clara and Holguín (9-13) and Cienfuegos and Guantánamo (7-15).

From Tuesday 9 to Sunday 14, the Cachorros will host the team of Vegueros of Pinar del Río.
