Works in Holguin to improve water supply networks

The Territorial Delegation of Hydraulic Resources in Holguin province is working on the improvement of the water supply networks through a group of investments aimed at shortening the service cycles, which are still high in some localities.

Among the main works are the pipelines in the municipalities of Mayarí, Banes, Gibara, Rafael Freyre and Calixto García, which include the replacement of pipes and the elimination of leaks, Jorge Bosch, deputy delegate of the sector, told ACN.

He specified that this program allows guaranteeing the pressure and quality standards required to provide greater accessibility and savings of the vital liquid and to respond to the demands of the population.

In addition, the investments cover the new pipelines in the tourist area of Ramón de Antilla, which contributes to reduce the distribution of water by pipes and the reduction of the own sources affected by the intense drought, he said.

On the other hand, he said, in the northern and southern systems of the provincial capital city, which supply the largest population and economic objectives, infrastructure maintenance is being carried out to reduce failures and cover the high demand.

In flooding areas of these territories, mechanized work is progressing on the unblocking of dikes, sewers and canals, which are essential to avoid overflows during heavy rains and tropical phenomena of great magnitude.

The province also has other projects in execution such as the Caletones desalination plant, in Gibara; the Pesquero pipeline, in “Rafael Freyre”, and Cueto water treatment plant, located in the benefited municipalities.

Holguín has more than 779,000 clients associated with aqueduct and sewage systems, which represents 76 percent of its population, and works such as the East-West Water Transfer are also being promoted to boost agriculture in rural and hard-to-reach localities.
