Holguin workers pay tribute to Lázaro Peña

Holguin workers paid well-deserved homage to Lázaro Peña, the captain of the Cuban working class, on the 50th anniversary of his physical disappearance this March 11.

The commemoration of the date took place at the Cigar Factory, outstanding industry of Tabacuba group in Holguin that honors this martyr with his name.

The commemoration ceremony was also attended by Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and First Secretary of this political organization in the province; Manuel Hernández Aguilera, deputy to the National Assembly of the People’s Power and Governor at this level and Idalmis Serrano Gómez, general secretary of the CTC in the territory.

After the laying of a wreath in the tombstone that perpetuates the image of Lázaro Peña in this center, Addiel Pérez Suarez, director of the factory, received from the hands of Ernesto Santiesteban and Idalmis Serrano the 85th anniversary plaque of the CTC.

Leonardo Aguilera González, general secretary of the Union of Agricultural and Forestry Workers in the province, highlighted the long history of the workers’ leader in the tobacco workers’ union.

At the age of 23 he was elected general secretary of the Tobacco Workers’ Union of Havana, and was appointed member of the executive committee of the National Workers’ Confederation of Cuba (CNOC), which in 1935 he went on to lead.

His first great task was to reorganize the trade union forces under the principle of unity. The result of that work was the creation of the Confederation of Cuban Workers (CTC), of which he was elected general secretary and from which he led numerous battles in favor of the interests of the working class.

In 1959 he was re-elected general secretary of the CTC -which later in 1961 changed its name to Central de Trabajadores de Cuba- and in 1965, due to his merits and trajectory within the trade union movement and contributions to the economic and social development of the country, he was elected member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, positions he held until his death in 1974.
