Holguin: International drug trafficking operation foiled

A total of 17 containers, containing 340.7 kg of marijuana, were seized by forces of the Ministry of the Interior on May 18 last, north of the municipality of Banes, Holguin, as a result of the plan of measures to strengthen the system for confronting international drug trafficking and of the cooperation actions between the Cuban Border Guard Troops and the U.S. Coast Guard.

At 11:07 a.m. that day, the Border Guard Troops, five miles north of the aforementioned province, learned through a telephone call from the 7th District of the Miami Coast Guard of the presence of a suspicious drug trafficking vessel with two crew members on board, white in color and two outboard motors.

Two Coast Guard surface units were dispatched to the scene and at 12:15 hours detected the offending target; they began their pursuit, and minutes later the launching of packages from the boat into the sea was observed. The pursuit continued until 18.8 miles north of Faro Lucrecia, where a Miami Coast Guard helicopter was identified as it flew over the offending boat.

Arrest of those involved in the international drug trafficking operation.

The drugs thrown into the sea were secured and the U.S. Coast Guard Vessel “CG Dependable 626” which was in the area was contacted, as well as the Coast Guard liaison in Havana, which in turn informed the Cuban side that the offending boat was intercepted by its service and sunk by its crew members, who were subsequently detained by the U.S. authorities.

The secured containers were transferred to the Holguin Naval Squadron and handed over to the Provincial Operational Guard, which will continue the investigations to collect and provide the necessary evidence, in order to contribute to the corresponding procedures to attract the criminal responsibility of those involved. During the laboratory tests it was proved that it was marijuana.

This fact ratifies Cuba’s political will of zero tolerance to the global phenomenon of illicit drug trafficking, while confirming the importance that our State attaches to international cooperation to confront this serious threat to the security of countries, especially with the United States, the main destination of most of the drugs that impact the maritime corridors near our national territory.
