Cachorros suffer a pair of Sunday blows against Leones

A solitary score and eight hits in 14 innings were all that the offense of the Cachorros de Holguín could produce against the pitching of the Leones de Industriales at the Calixto García stadium, which led them to a pair of defeats, with scores of 2×1 and 6×0.

In the first inning, the Holguineros scored in the third inning their only score of the doubleheader with hits by Edward Magaña, Yordan Manduley and Michael Gorgüet, to drive.

The capitalists tied the game in the third inning, after a ticket to Peñalver and a run-scoring run by Yasiel Santoya, against starter Rubén Rodríguez, who was ejected after six innings of work.

The visitors decided the game in the seventh, against Michel Cabrera, now 5-1, who opened with a bunt, then hit a sacrifice fly, took the runner to third on a grounder to second and Roberto Acebedo hit a golden jit through the short field.

In summary Industriales, who took the game 3-2, scored two runs and had four hits; Holguin scored once with six hits, in a game played without errors.

The winner was Juan Xavier Peñalver (2-1), in relief, with two immaculate chapters in which he struck out two, to complete an outstanding pitching job started by Raymond Figueredo, with a clean sheet in five chapters, in which he gave up six hits, struck out five and hit two balls.

The second game was decided in the first inning with a run against starter José Antonio Sánchez (1-4), who after striking out the first batter, allowed a hit, gave away a ticket, committed a wild pitch and then took a sacrifice fly.

Sanchez opened the second inning with a ticket and was replaced by Luis Cáser, who hung three consecutive hides, but in the sixth, after one out, he allowed a runner to score and gave away a ticket, runners who then scored by the inefficient relief of left-handed reliever Dayrián Batista, Ramiro Rodríguez and José Miguel Rodríguez, who went to the showers without getting an out and with one run per capita on their record.

Sergio Moroso, with a ticket in 1 1/3 and José Antonio Rodríguez, who got one out but allowed a couple of hits to substitute batters, finished on the mound.

The victory went to reliever Frank Ernesto Herrera (2-0) who threw three chapters, with one hit, four strikeouts, one ticket and one wild card. Left-handed starter Eduardo Fabián Rodríguez worked four innings with one hit, two strikeouts, three walks, one wild pitch and two walks.

The game ended with six runs and eight hits for the Leones and only two hits, including Ernesto Torres’ two-run homer, for the defeated Leones.

At the end of the tenth individual games, of the 15 teams in the LXII National Baseball Series, Holguín is in fifth place in the standings with a 26-23 record, three and a half games behind the leaders of Santiago de Cuba (30-20).

Starting this Tuesday 23rd, the  The Cachorros will face, as visitors, the Azucareros de Villa Clara at the Augusto César Sandino stadium in Santa Clara, when the last third of the baseball league begins.
