Personal exhibition remembers Holguin’s Engraving Workshop

Holguin Engraving Workshop hosts the personal exhibition “The necessary pressure” by visual artist Yosvani Rodriguez Batista, who has been working in that center for 25 years and tells with his works the need to retake the space of graphic creation, once the cultural epicenter of the city, as well as that expression within the movement of artists of the fine arts in the province.

The exhibition, in salute to the 54th anniversary of the Workshop, also pays homage to its late master, Emilio Chiang Fernandez, recognized as one of the most outstanding and constant engravers and printers of the territory.

“La presión…” is made up of 14 unprinted matrices, made with techniques such as xylography, collography and lithography, plus an installation, which as a whole seek to question the viewer, through irony, fragmentation and intertextuality.

In the words of the catalog, art historian, teacher and researcher Ernesto Galván, refers that “the artist delights us with an exhibition that we will remember for its noble intention and its purpose of stirring memories, as it recontextualizes objects and spaces that once accompanied lovers of the art of printing”.

The inauguration was attended by students and professors of the Regional Academy of Fine Arts, directors of Culture, intellectuals and artists, among them the founder of the Workshop and current president of Uneac in the province of Holguin, Julio Mendez Rivero.

Writer Lourdes Gonzalez Herrero had pointed out in another occasion that “this was a place of creative labors where the plastic arts, the trova, the literature were mixed and there was a dialogue at any time about the universal happening of the culture, for that reason its additional importance”.

The Engraving Workshop, created on November 12, 1969, has become a legend that pales in time, which is why this exhibition becomes a conscious expression of a will aimed at its imminent recovery.

“La presión necesaria” has several precedents in which Yosvani also participated, such as the exhibitions “Rescate” and “Tríptico con sabor a Cuba”, the latter together with Raciel Suárez and Dagoberto Driggs, who combined diverse printing techniques with others within the broad universe of the plastic arts, to show from different perspectives the face of engraving and transgress its traditional forms of conception and representation.
