Olga Lidia arrived at our office of Radio Angulo website and immediately made it easy with the work team. Her joy was infectious and on a Cuban press day she bought us a cake and shared it with her new co-workers.
She liked to be called Lily, because it was easier to remember than the long name Olga Lidia Gonzalez Asen, an English translator by profession, and perhaps because she was English she had that phlegmatic temperament when it came to socializing with everyone.
Her cheerful face highlighted her beautiful blue eyes and I never really saw her angry about any professional or family situation, and she advised me not to be so choleric in my professional relationships and from her I have been learning to improve my character in these years of professional coexistence.
Today I was late in going to the funeral home in Los Alamos, in the city of Holguin, and I did not have the courage to see you, because I think you walk in the woods of the city, on the beaches of Puerto Padre, or collecting materials for the beautiful handicrafts that you made in a handmade way.
It hurts to see how you have departed to eternity so young, because even when your body was lifeless you looked younger and you had already turned 60 last Monday.
It hurts to see how you have traveled to eternity being such a prepared professional and that you could still contribute more to the beautiful task of translating Journalism, which is written for Radio Angulo’s website.
As a mother you were proud of your two sons, your beloved Rubén and your beautiful granddaughters, whom you adored and showed with pride to your acquaintances and friends, and more than once we observed that you shared joy in the era of social networks.
Now I always remember that advice you gave me and that I will never forget: “It is not worth being sad or angry for a long time, give joy to life, José Miguel”, and now when we are all shocked to see so many friends and relatives emigrating and not having them closer or when the attitude of others is not the best towards us, I do not forget your teaching.
You will always be Lily, the translator of the Radio Angulo website, and personally I also appreciate what you taught me about English, life and how to be a better person.
You were the heart of an angel. I never saw you shed a tear, even when you knew your illness had no cure. You never confessed in public that you knew you were going to die and you were a strong woman and that strength made you live more years to see your granddaughters grow up and enjoy life, which is always beautiful, even when it gives us blows like your early departure.
Olga Lidia Gonzalez Asen was a translator of English language at Radio Angulo web site, where she worked for years and made many friends and left behind so many good memories that no-one dare to believe she has parted, despite they knew her medical condition was not at its height.
