PhD María Dolores Ortiz, prestigious Holguin-born intellectual, dies

Holguin-born PhD María Dolores Ortiz died at the age of 87 this Friday in Havana, according to a last-minute report by the website cubadebate, which does not specify the cause of death.

According to the first information, which appeared in the Cuban digital press, she will be held a wake in the coming hours at the funeral home of Calzada and K, in Havana.

Ortiz was a PhD in Philological Sciences, full professor at the University of Havana, professor of merit at Enrique José Varona Higher Pedagogical Institute and National Labor Heroine of the Republic of Cuba.

The distinguished and beloved intellectual was founder and panelist of the television program Escriba y Lea (Write and Read), characterized by spreading Cuban and universal culture and art, where she sought to motivate viewers to read and learn about the history of the largest of the Antilles and to reach the universal.

The professor was invited to the different editions of the Holguin Culture Week and the Ibero-American Culture Festival, provincial and international events, where she gave lectures on the culture and history of Cuba.

She was an outstanding Cuban intellectual. PhD in Philological Sciences, professor of the University of Havana, professor of Merit of the Enrique José Varona Higher Pedagogical Institute and National Heroine of Labor of the Republic of Cuba.

For the Cuban people she is a very popular character; all alone years she has been the only woman on the panel of Escriba y Lea, one of the programs with the longest history on Cuban Television.

She served until she died as an advisor to the Minister of Higher Education and is president of the Friends of the Book Movement.

Biographical summary

She was born in Holguín, Cuba on April 25, 1936. Her family played a decisive role in her formation. Her father was a lawyer and her mother was single she was a teacher.

Studies

PhD. Ortiz went to Havana like so many young people at that time, in search of a university degree.

She arrived at the University in October 1953, just months after the assault on the Moncada Barracks, an event that marked her forever.
