Fuentes, new provincial chess champion in Holguín

The Provincial Expert (EP) Hector Luis Fuentes was crowned as the new chess champion in Holguin, event that took place at Eradio Dominguez academy of this discipline, located in the Cuban City of the Parks.

Fuentes defeated in the seventh and last round the until then leader, his peer Miguel Gelasio Sanchez, and forced a quadruple tie at the top of the event, together with National Master (MN) Yudel Romero and FIDE Master (FM) Reyson Ricardo, all with 4.5 units.

When the tie-breaker system was applied, those with the best dividends were Fuentes and Romero, in first and second places, respectively, and in turn earned the right to represent Holguin in the next Eastern Zone tourney of the science game, which will give tickets to the Absolute Championship of Cuba.

The information, provided by the national referee Roberto Alcantara Marrero, specifies that to reach the title Fuentes harvested three victories, the same amount of draws and only one defeat.

This young athlete already has in his record a silver medal in the grouping of the Association of Physically and Motor Disabled People (Aclifim) in the National Chess Championship for people with disabilities, developed in Holguin earlier this year and first place in the U-12 category in the 2018 “Looking for a Capablanca” Tournament.
