Birán, where the Raúl who dedicated his life to the Revolution was born

Museum curator Leidys Martínez Hidalgo tours the Birán Historical Complex and reveals the roots of Raúl Castro. The fourth of seven siblings born in that picturesque house in Holguin that today preserves the memory of those who dedicated their lives to the Revolution.

Martínez Hidalgo told the Cuban News Agency exclusively that Birán. Located in what is now the municipality of Cueto, was conceived by Don Ángel Castro as a self-sufficient village. Also that this characteristic exposed the children of the Castro Ruz family to a dual reality between the comfort of a well-to-do family. A daily contact with farmers, Haitians, and agricultural workers who lived in the neighboring huts.

From childhood, the specialist recalled, Raúl was distinguished by his cheerful and mischievous nature. He was a loyal companion to his brother Fidel, whom he would accompany to the balcony every afternoon to shout greetings to every peasant who walked along the main road.

In the large house, black and white photographs are preserved on the wooden walls. Including one of the wedding of one of the sisters, which Fidel and Raúl attended dressed in olive green. Along with pieces of beds, rocking chairs, porcelain, and various family heirlooms that the museum treasures.

Before becoming commander and president, Raúl was a child who played among the trees of the village. Ran away to the Haitian barracks, and learned, from the cradle, the contradictions of a country marked by inequality.

That early exposure to inequality instilled in him a social conscience that soon became a political commitment. The children of the marriage had a secure future in a comfortable position. Also both economically and socially and yet they chose to risk everything for the Revolution.

Moreover the museum curator stated that every time Raúl visits Birán. Even when accompanied by a historian, he is the historian of his own journey. Walking among the memories of his childhood with a prodigious memory that no one can replace.

That small piece of land in Holguin province forged not only the figure of a guerrilla fighter and statesman. Also the genuine values that Raúl maintains at nearly 95 years old and that have positioned him as an undisputed leader. Always ready, with one foot in the stirrup, to demonstrate his courage whenever Cuba requires it.
