Sanctions on New Entities Intensify Blockade Against Cuba

As part of its hostile policy of harassment against Cuba, the United States announced new sanctions against five state entities and eight officials on the island.

According to the State Department statement, the new measures target companies and officials linked to the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces. For alleged arms imports and military cooperation with Russia and China, Washington’s historical adversaries.

“The Trump Administration is taking new steps to protect our national security by imposing sanctions on entities and individuals that facilitate Havana’s military relations. And arms shipments to the Cuban regime,” said the main architect of these attacks, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a statement.

Also the sanctions freeze any property or financial interests of those designated under US jurisdiction. Prohibit US persons and companies from conducting transactions with them. Washington also warned that foreign banks and companies that do business with those sanctioned could face similar measures.

These new sanctions target Tecnoimport, Duna S.A., the Union of Military Industries (UIM), and the Yuri Gagarin military-industrial enterprise.

Also included on this list is the Cuban Export and Import Company of Specialized Technical Services, Articles, and Products (Tecnotex). A subsidiary of the Business Administration Group S.A. (Gaesa). Which was previously sanctioned, according to the text.

Among the officials designated by Washington are the Cuban Minister of the Armed Forces, Álvaro López Miera. The Chief of Staff, Roberto Legrá Sotolongo; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Antonio Remón Rodríguez. And the Minister of Economy, Oscar Enrique Biosca Gallego.
The new sanctions also target Cuba’s military attachés in Russia, Mónica Milián Gómez, and in China, Waldo Pérez Cortés. As well as the general directors of the UIM (Union of Industrialists of the Caribbean), Roberto Jesús Viciana Mousset. And of Tecnoimport, Heriberto Sánchez Alleyne.

The United States maintains a policy of maximum economic, financial, and extraterritorial pressure against Cuba. Aimed at intensifying the blockade, damaging its economy, and persecuting third countries, companies, and individuals that maintain legitimate ties with the Caribbean nation.

For more than three decades, the U.S. embargo has been condemned by the United Nations General Assembly. Also where the resolution calling for its lifting receives the support of an overwhelming majority of member states annually. With Washington isolated and only a small number of allies voting in favor.
