Alternatives to boost food production in Holguin

Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca, accompanied by the country’s Minister of Agriculture, Ydael Pérez Brito, held an exchange with executives of the agricultural sector in Holguín to discuss various issues related to food production.

Gathered at the Delegation of Agriculture in the province and as part of the governmental visit that concluded today in the territory, Tapia Fonseca expressed some of his main concerns such as the low salaries of agricultural workers.

He also stressed on the importance of linking the workers to the results obtained in the sector, in order to encourage their performance and improve their working conditions.

The need to diversify production bases in agriculture was also discussed. The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized pn the urgency of increasing food production and seeking alternatives to guarantee food security in the country.

In this regard, he pointed to the structural and productive disorganization of agriculture as a problem that must be addressed urgently.

He emphasized on the need to implement measures to improve planning and management in the sector, thereby strengthening its productive capacity.

Another aspect that was mentioned during the exchange was the situation of agricultural cooperatives that show losses. Tapia Fonseca stressed the importance of reversing this situation by implementing strategies to increase the efficiency and profitability of these cooperatives.

In difficult times, support for farmers is essential to guarantee food security and rural development. Farmers are the ones who cultivate the land and produce the food we all eat. However, they often face different challenges that can make their work difficult, such as lack of access to resources and technology, climate change and insecurity, he said.

He spoke of the crime against rural property, which affects producers so much, generating a climate of insecurity and distrust with direct implications for agricultural production and the welfare of farmers.

The Deputy Prime Minister stressed the importance of supporting farmers as a fundamental issue to ensure food security despite the various challenges facing the country, such as the lack of access to resources and technology and the scarce availability of fuel, among others.

Also present at the meeting were Diosmany Cruz Morales, member of the Provincial Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba in Holguín and Rigoberto Rivero Durán, Coordinator of Agrifood Programs in the Provincial Government.
