Alfredo Mas, an intense professional life in Cuban lyrical voices        

Baritone Alfredo Mas López celebrates 30 years of artistic career, and as a member of the company of the Teatro Lírico Rodrigo Prats, founded by tenor Raúl Camayd, is considered by the specialized critics as a relevant figure in his formation, along with soprano Náyade Proenza, and other important lyrical voices from Holguín.

On the occasion of this anniversary, the interpreter, considered one of the icons of the zarzuela and opera in Cuba, talked to Radio Angulo digital.

What projects would you like to bring to reality, from the city of Holguin, to which you have been faithful?

-The work Colba, an aboriginal term that means Cuba, is a musical symphonic poem inspired by the history of Holguín represented in the Mural Orígenes (Origins), work of Holguin’s visual arts that represents moments of the history from the colonization to the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, which is a project with the Holguin Symphonic Orchestra in one of my great dreams.

“Another of my dreams is the lyrical sainete for children El Karaoque de la  oca loca, based on a text of the Holguin writer and poet Ronel Gonzalez, and I have presented it to be Gonzalez and I have presented it to be performed in conjunction with the Company Ronda de los Sueños”.

The zarzuela genre in Cuba has a great acceptance among audiences. Regarding your work “Leyenda” (Legend), why hasn’t it been premiered?

-It will be a world premiere. It is the first Cuban zarzuela and I wrote it in Holguín. “Leyenda” has not been staged due to the production difficulties and economic production difficulties and economic issues the country is going through.

What is the play about?

-It is a beautiful love story that takes place during the Spanish colonial period in the tunnel of today’s La Periquera Museum.

What inspired you to write this play?It is a way for the people of Holguín to feel identified with this well-known story. I hope that at some point it will be brought to the stage,” says the artist, says the artist with a hopeful look in his eyes.

In other facets, what are you creating?

-Requiem is my recent creation dedicated to personalities victims of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thirteen pieces make it up, among them the one inspired by María Dolores Rodriguez,” who was the director of the Rodrigo Prats Lyric Theater until her death victim of the lethal pandemic.

Alfredo Mas López has had an intense life on stage that in 30 years has taken him to the United States of America and to other nations such as Ecuador in 2005, in Ecuador in 2005, in the opera season at the Teatro Nacional de La Habana or in Venezuela National Theater of Havana or in Venezuela, among other countries.

In his roles he has played the following characters and plays: Juan in “Los Gavilanes”, René in the operettaThe Count of Luxembourg” and Pimienta in the zarzuela “Cecilia Valdés”, among multiple and successful among many successful interpretations, which place him among one of the most acclaimed Holguin native artists most acclaimed by lovers of bell canto.
