Romerías de Mayo and the Role of Culture in Thought

Journalist and audiovisual producer Erick Méndez Díaz highlighted in Holguin the role of culture as a network of meanings, practices, memories, and power relations in social life. A perspective that serves as a guiding thread in the critical analysis of the podcast A Contracorriente (Against the Current).

Méndez, a journalist with Cuban Radio and a panelist, stated this Tuesday that his objective was to create a dialogue. That invites participants to rethink culture and understand it from all its facets. With contemporary critical reflection during the conference “Communication and the Construction of an Integrative View of Culture from Cuba.”

The host commented on the creation of the podcast as a space that articulates multiple perspectives with diverse personalities. Also with the aim of conveying the perception that art and culture are tools for emancipation and understanding of reality by the individual capable of transforming it.

Moreover the material’s structure is based on a dialogue between two viewpoints that build consensus by simplifying complex concepts into simple language. Prompting reflection in the listeners, explained the professional from Radio Rebelde.

He added that the rise of virtual spaces has allowed communication to become a living archive of contemporary thought. Addressing topics such as social movements, the entertainment industry, artistic creation, cultural colonization, and other issues impacting society.

Also he highlighted the integration of knowledge with individual perspectives and meanings in a 15-minute segment. Which in turn recovers the value of in-depth conversation in digital public spaces. This is achieved through 34 episodes that carry a narrative promoting the concept that culture belongs to us all.

The panel was part of the program of the Memoria Nuestra Congress. Within the activities of the 33rd edition of the Romerías de Mayo. An event organized by the Hermanos Saíz Association, which runs until the 8th of this month in the Cuban city of parks.
