Cuba at the Central American Games: Medals Born of Perseverance

Behind Cuba’s results at the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games lies much more than numbers. There is the story of a sports academy, the sacrifice of athletes, and the dedication of coaches.

To date, the Cuban delegation has accumulated 134 medals (42 gold, 40 silver, and 52 bronze) and is in third place. A result that confirms the strength of a competitive tradition consolidated over decades.

Behind each medal is a story that the statistics don’t reflect: hours of preparation, personal efforts, teamwork. And the commitment of athletes and coaches who arrive at the competition in a setting marked by additional challenges.

At Santo Domingo 2026, several disciplines once again underpinned the island’s performance. Wrestling was one of the main protagonists with 10 gold and five bronze medals. Weightlifting contributed one gold, two silver, and one bronze; while canoeing added five titles.

Taekwondo finished its participation with three gold, four silver, and four bronze medals. Judo contributed 11 medals of various colors; hockey won two titles. Other disciplines such as men’s volleyball, with one bronze medal. Triathlon, with one silver; and rowing, with four gold, six silver, and two bronze, contributed to the overall result.

Also this tally is further enhanced by the medals won in cycling, chess, sailing, and other disciplines. While Cuba still awaits the performance of boxing, one of its historically greatest sources of champions.

Behind each triumph lies the work of the coaches who guide an athlete’s development for years. The work of specialists and doctors, and the support of families who make sacrifices so that a race, a fight, or a weightlifting event can be successfully completed.

That’s why the hugs after victories have a special value. They encapsulate the history of a team and a nation that finds pride in its representatives. The Cubans competing in Santo Domingo 2026 are part of a society facing economic challenges and limitations that also extend to the sports arena.

Cuban authorities denounce that the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States has repercussions in the sector. By hindering the acquisition of specialized equipment, restricting access to certain technologies. Obstructing international exchanges, and increasing preparation costs.

Added to this are the difficulties for the international mobility of delegations. In recent years, several teams and representatives from the island have faced problems obtaining visas under U.S. jurisdiction.

In June 2025, the entry applications of the 16 members of the Cuban women’s volleyball team. Also who were scheduled to participate in the NORCECA Final Four in Puerto Rico, were rejected.

A month later, in July of that same year, the United States denied visas to several members of the coaching staff of the baseball team from the Pinar del Rio municipality of La Palma. Preventing their participation in the qualifying tournament for the Little League World Series of girls’ softball, 9-10 year-old category.

More recently, in February 2026, visa applications were rejected for eight members of the Cuban delegation to the VI World Baseball Classic.

Cuban athletes do not compete outside the reality of their country. They are part of it. They train, travel, strive for their goals, and celebrate their victories in a nation that was also subjected to an oil embargo by the United States at the beginning of this year.

In many homes, even a deeply rooted tradition like gathering to enjoy a baseball game now depends on the availability of electricity.

That’s why, behind the medals won at Santo Domingo 2026, there’s a story that transcends the color of the medal. The story of athletes who persevere, coaches who train, and a nation that, in challenging times, continues to support its representatives.
