Intellectuals in Holguin Highlight Fidel’s Cultural Work

The discussion “Fidel and Culture,” led by writer Ronel González Sánchez and historian Hernel Pérez Concepción. Kicked off a series of activities dedicated to highlighting the work of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution in defending cultural values.

The event, held at the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) in Holguin. Included the opening of the exhibition “Figure in Transit.” Featuring pieces that explore the legacy of the revolutionary leader. Through the eyes of various intellectuals from the province.

Pérez Concepción explained that among the first things Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro (1926-2016) did to connect society. And make the promotion of culture possible was the Literacy Campaign. Given that illiteracy in Holguin before 1959 hovered between 40 and 60 percent of the population.

González Sánchez recalled that important institutions such as the Territorial Publishing System. Casa de las Américas, and the National Printing Office were founded during the Revolution. Highlighting the vision of positioning culture as both the nation’s shield and sword.

The writer stated that it is vital, in these difficult times the country is experiencing. To defend the memory and legacy of Fidel Castro, to remember what was accomplished and what the Revolution represents. Citing himself as an example, since he was a young peasant who studied, worked, and wrote thanks to the education he received.

“I always felt very close to Fidel, ever since I was a child and he accompanied the Pioneers to the student organization’s congresse; because that was who he was, and that was the importance he always placed on Cuban children and youth,” he noted.

The author insisted on the need to bring Fidel’s thinking into the present. A thinking that conceived of culture as the best antidote to mediocrity and spiritual colonization.

Also the series of meetings, organized by UNEAC (National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba). It is dedicated to the centenary of Fidel Castro and will bring together intellectuals and prominent figures from the province each month. To discuss and present on his life and work, covering topics such as his student years, his childhood in Biran, and his strategy in the Revolution.
