United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned today of the imminence of a climate catastrophe. He urged the world to take the necessary measures to prevent it.
In a recorded message, the UN chief recalled that 10 years ago world leaders pledged to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The threshold that, according to scientists, is crucial to avoiding the worst devastation.
Guterres expressed his concern about the failure to meet that promise. He stated that “the scorching heat, wildfires, and deadly floods are a warning of what lies ahead.”
Every fraction of a degree will cost lives, destroy livelihoods, exacerbate inequality, and bring ecosystems closer to irreversible damage, he noted.
However, he asserted that global warming can still be minimized and slowed. Also that the phase-out of fossil fuels and the renewable energy revolution can be accelerate.
Guterres urged a drastic reduction in methane pollution and the protection of land, forests, and oceans.
Also to this end, he considered it essential to promote effective national plans that include increased funding for climate action. With measures to address the needs of those suffering its consequences.
The science is clear. The solutions are within our reach, and the world has never been better prepared to implement them. Now is the time to increase ambition and accelerate action. Because the fight to limit global warming is the fight for humanity, he concluded.
