Marlon Herrera, a judoka from Holguin and champion of the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo in the 73-kilogram division. He will participate in the Budapest Grand Slam in Hungary. Which will take place from the 11th to the 13th of this month.
Herrera is part of a group of nine Cuban athletes training at the Cerro Pelado High-Performance Athlete Training School (ESFAAR) to compete in the Hungarian capital.
Other Cuban athletes registered in the men’s division are Jonathan Charón (60 kg), Orlando Polanco (66 kg), Iván Felipe Silva (100 kg), and Andy Granda (+100 kg).
Representing Cuba in the women’s division are Dalis Sentmanat (52 kg), Maylín del Toro (63 kg), Lianet Cardona (78 kg), and Dayanara Curbelo (+78 kg).
Moreover the organizing committee announced that approximately 583 judokas from 74 nations will participate, 358 men and 225 women.
The importance of Cuba’s participation in this Grand Slam lies in the fact that it awards points toward the world ranking. A pathway to qualification for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
In 2026, Herrera won the title at the Central American and Caribbean Cup, held in Panama. The same nation that hosted the continental event where he finished in ninth place. At the Paris Grand Slam, he lost his first match.
