Holguin Triumphs at Union of Writers Prize

Two authors from Holguin province won the awards at the 28th edition of the La Gaceta de Cuba Poetry Prize and the 2026 Prometeo Creation Grant.

Ronel González, a writer from Holguin, was among the 65 anonymously submitted works. The La Gaceta de Cuba Prize, awarded by the Association of Writers of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC). It was given to González for his work, Proceso (in)civilizatorio (Process (In)civilizational).

The jury determined that his work possessed originality and expressive power. Transforming the cruellest and most ironic events of history into poetry. In dialogue with the traditions of Martí and Lezama Lima.

Meanwhile, the Prometeo Grant was awarded to Erián Peña, also from Holguin, for Las zonas bajas (The Lowlands). A collection of works that creates a unique universe about islands and flooding in times of climate change.

Furthermore the jury, composed of writers Norberto Codina, Pedro Peglez, and Caridad Atencio. Also awarded First Mention to Esplendor, by José Luis Santos (Villa Clara). And recognized Re-velaciones, by Liliana Isabel Salazar (Havana), with a Prometeo Grant Mention.

Other mentions went to El pánico y la herida, by Tomás Eugenio Escobar (Las Tunas). Laderas, by Armando López; and Imaginismo desde la nieve, by Oliver Pérez, both from Havana.
