FMC in Holguin Promotes Community Projects

The Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) in Holguin province is promoting community projects. To foster female talent and local well-being. Among these projects is Sumando Manos (Adding Hands), which focuses on artistic creation and recycling.

Seven years after its founding, the initiative centers on direct work in the Pedro Díaz Coello and Vista Alegre community councils in the provincial capital. Also where it supports social institutions and vulnerable population groups by donating handmade toys and household items. Explained Magda Osorio Rojas, a member of the project, to CNA.

The group consists of more than 20 people, mostly women affiliated with the Cuban Fund for Cultural Assets. Who carry out artisanal work such as weaving, sewing, and pottery, making flowerpots, jugs, and other decorative objects, she noted.

Also the group collaborates closely with public health and education institutions. Including the oncology ward of the Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja Pediatric Hospital and homes for children without parental care. To which they donate resources and make regular visits.

Osorio Rojas added that they also provided special attention to a vulnerable child in the Pedro Díaz Coello community. Participated in local celebrations and festivities, and organized fairs to showcase and sell some of their creations.

The organizer explained that, despite limitations in raw materials, part of the group’s creative identity was reuse. They recycled objects and clothing to transform them into decorations, rugs, carpets, and other useful items.

Currently, even children have joined in making simple crafts. Which is part of a strategy aimed at teaching skills, addressing local needs, and building emotional connections with the community, she said.

Sumando Manos (Adding Hands) emerged on March 8th, 2019. Among its first tasks was the handmade production of cloth face masks and the creation of red hearts for healthcare workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.
