The 2026 hurricane season begins today. The Cuban Institute of Meteorology reported that current atmospheric and oceanic conditions suggest it will be less active than normal.
Also the seasonal forecast projects the formation of 11 tropical storms throughout the North Atlantic basin. Five of which could reach hurricane strength, and two of which could become major hurricanes.
Eight of these storms are expected to develop in the Atlantic Ocean, two in the Caribbean Sea, and one in the Gulf of Mexico. Also the Climate and Forecast Center of the Cuban Institute of Meteorology emphasized.
Regarding Cuba, the risk of the country being affected by at least one hurricane is moderate, with a 40% probability. A value slightly higher than the climatological risk of 35%. For tropical storms, that probability increases to 75%, the source specified.
The tropical cyclones in 2026 will be named Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly, Edouard, Fay, Gonzalo, Hanna, Isaias, Josephine, Kyle, Leah, Marco, Nana, Omar, Paulette, Rene, Sally, Teddy, Vicky, and Wilfred.
