Google Complies with Trump and Names Lake Ontario “Lake America”

Google’s global satellite mapping and positioning service, Google Maps, has changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America. For users in the United States after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to change the name of this body of water. That his country shares with Canada amid the escalating trade conflict between Washington and Ottawa.

Google Maps now uses the name “Lake America” instead of “Lake Ontario” after Trump signed the order to change the name.

In an executive order signed last Thursday, Trump instructed the USGS to change the name to Lake America.

Those connecting from Canada will continue to see the name Lake Ontario. While those connecting from third countries will see both names.

Google did the same when Trump signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America in January 2025. In retaliation for what he considered an insufficient response from the neighboring country in the fight against fentanyl trafficking.
