The 31st edition of the Romerías de Mayo festival will be held, as usual, from May 3 to 8, and will be dedicated to the 30th anniversary of this important event and to the 65th anniversary of the creation of Casa de las Américas and the Cuban Film Institute (Icaic for its Spanish acronym).

The World Festival of Artistic Youth, organized by the Saiz Brothers Association (AHS) in Holguin, together with the system of institutions and the Provincial Directorate of Culture, will feature concerts, theoretical events, spaces for fine arts and performing arts, book presentations and tributes, Armando Ruiz Olivera, president of the affiliate in the province, recently commented.

These Romerías de Mayo will cover numerous spaces in the city, with more than 15 events and several squares for the promotion of young avant-garde art. Tributes will be paid to founders and young artists from all over the island will participate, as well as Maestros de Juventudes who contribute with their work to the development of the novel creation in our country, Ruiz added.

The Contest and Congress of Thought Memoria Nuestra, considered the backbone of this mega-event, will be based on the same themes of Romerías: the 65th anniversary of Casa de las Américas and Icaic; and will count on the presence of important Cuban writers and researchers such as Abel Prieto and Jorge Fornet from Casa de las Américas, as well as Omar Valiño, director of the José Martí National Library, and José Rojas Bez, from Holguín.

This theoretical contest will award the Memoria Nuestra Awards for Research and Sociocultural Project, and will include delegates from several provinces in conferences, panel discussions and presentations of various papers.

For its part, Babel, a space for the visual arts, will be dedicated to photography, with several exhibitions of this type to be held in different spaces and institutions of the city, mainly by young creators and Ernesto Fernandez (National Fine Arts Award) and Humberto Mayo. Meanwhile, the performing arts will deploy an itinerant program in streets and parks, with groups such as Teatro La Trinidad, and will hold the space Danza en Paisajes Públicos, with the presence of the Contemporary Dance Company Codanza as host.

Cámara Azul, an event that brings together young audiovisual filmmakers, will feature screenings, panels and round tables dedicated to the 65th anniversary of Icaic. Special guest speaker will be researcher and essayist Luciano Castillo, director of the Cinemateca de Cuba, and a representative exhibition of Cuban film posters is also planned.

Palabras compartidas (Shared Words), a literary event in Romerías de Mayo, will pay tribute to Cuban poet Emilio Ballagas on the 70th anniversary of his death, with debates, book presentations and poetry readings, organized, together with the Literature Section, by Ediciones La Luz, a Holguin-based imprint of the AHS.

While Vivencias y Raíces, organized by the Provincial Center of Culture Houses, will come with workshops for art instructors and amateur artists, and a special encounter between the Tumbas Francesas from Santiago de Cuba and Sagua de Tánamo, in Holguín, both considered Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Musically speaking, these 31st May Romerías will feature the Holguin Symphony Orchestra, Swiss flautist Antipe Da Stella, Nelson Valdes, Polito Ibanez, Ron con Cola, Duo Iris, Roly Berrio, Carlos Lage, Tony Avila, La Feria de los Trovadores and Alexander Abreu with Havana D’Primera, among other groups and soloists.

They will perform in venues such as Quiero una canción, which will pay tribute to the life and work of Cuban singer-songwriter Pablo Milanés; Destrabando la trova, La plaza del arte joven and the Esquina del Jazz, in addition to the opening and closing concerts of the festival that gathers in Holguin, every year, the vanguard of young art in our country.
