The province of Holguin is a pioneer in the use of clinical trials, a field in which its participation is recognized as one of the territories with the largest number of protocols assumed, with a stable and functional structure.
That is why the provincial hospitals are one of the main spaces where they are developed, among them the clinical-surgical Lucía Íñiguez Landín, which is currently participating in six protocols, in different phases.
On the particularities and behavior of this indicator, Dr. Gisela Ramírez, coordinator of clinical trials at this institution, referred that the hospital has been involved in this activity since 2012, and the main promoting centers are the Center for Molecular Engineering (CIM) and the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB).
She added that although most of the trials have been aimed at oncology, other specialties have also been open to this possibility and highlighted some of the results in which they took part, such as HeberNasvac, designed for hepatitis B, and Heberprot-P, for diabetic foot ulcer.
She added that the Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico is involved in six planned trials, some currently underway and others in the planning phase. Under development is the trial where the promoting center is the CIM. “In this case we have for Alzheimer’s and for ataxias, where NeuroEpo is used. We also have the part of placental histotherapy and that of vitiligo, with the Dermatology department”, said the specialist of second degree in Internal Medicine.
As far as the CIGB’s research is concerned, the “Lucia” participates in three clinical trials. The study of expanded intervention with Jusvinza in patients with rheumatoid arthritis stands out.
Once the study closes and the product is shown to be successful, it is transferred to routine medical practice and is normally indicated by the specialists of the different departments. In this way, the therapeutic possibilities within the reach of the physicians of the different specialties to treat their patients increase.
