Cuban cinema in celebration at nearing Romerías

The celebration for the 65th anniversary of the Cuban Film Institute will continue in Holguin from May 2 to 8, during the traditional Romerías de Mayo, a multicultural event organized by the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS), which this year will pay tribute to the institution in charge of the seventh art in Cuba.

For the occasion, Holguin people will have a program of more than seven hours of screenings every day, mostly premieres, both at the recently renovated Cine Marti and the iconic Café Tres Lucia, as well as on a large outdoor screen that will be located in San Jose Park and will operate from seven to nine in the evening.

Among the films coming soon to Holguín are “Una noche con los Rolling Stones”, by director Patricia Ramos; “Línea Roja”, by Alejandro Gil; “Aislados”, by Yoe Pérez, Zenia Veigas, Maritza Ceballos and Sailín Carbonel and the multi-awarded film “La mujer salvaje”, by Alan González.

In the children’s section, the morning showings will include classic tales of universal literature in animated version, as part of the series “Cuentos de Ñañaseré”, as well as new adventures of the mythical character Fernanda, among them, El extraño caso del güije and El extraño caso de la yunta, both short films directed by the renowned animated film producer Mario Rivas.

Jewels of the national cinematography will also be exhibited in Romerías de Mayo. Thus, Holguin people will be able to enjoy a restored copy of “Strawberry and Chocolate”, a film directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Juan Carlos Tabío, which celebrated 30 years of release last December. The film will be presented by one of its protagonists: actor Jorge Perugorría, winner of the 2024 National Film Award.

Other important exponents of the national seventh art will also participate in the World Festival of Artistic Youth: actresses Eslinda Núñez and Verónica Lynn, director Manuel Herrera and film critic, researcher and historian Luciano Castillo.

A showcase of young Cuban filmmakers will also be presented at the Cámara Azul event, dedicated to audiovisuals, with participants from Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, Camagüey, Ciego de Avila, Matanzas and Havana.

Likewise, the International Exhibition El Almacén de la Imagen and the Jornada de Cine Andante, of the AHS in Camagüey and Guantánamo, respectively, will launch their calls, taking advantage of the confluence of audiovisual filmmakers from all over the country in Romerías de Mayo.
