Holguin has always been distinguished for being a fertile land of great creators. In each of its municipalities, talents flourish that embrace the most diverse artistic manifestations. Feeding a living heritage that transcends geographical borders. Evaristo Hernández Prieto emerges from that lineage. Antilla saw him born among the murmur of the waves and that evocative atmosphere where art germinates almost naturally.
From a very early age, this Antillean learned to channel his human concerns through theater, dance, plastic arts and letters. That childhood impulse found new nuances throughout his prolific life. Nourishing himself with knowledge in different regions of the country.
This is how he arrived in Ciego de Avila, after a family turn that opened new scenarios for him to channel and disseminate his work. Years later, living in Havana and in full maturity, he joined literary workshops. A space where he delved into writing techniques and polished his poetic vocation.
That dedication to the spinel verse bore fruit in 2004 with the publication of his first book of poetry, “El desvelo de este viento.” In this collection of décimas, Evaristo sensitively captured his particular vision of the world. Intertwining experiences, interior landscapes and the inescapable connection with the roots of his homeland.
However, his artistic desire is not limited to printed pages. In his moments of calm, the poet gives way to the meticulous craftsman. With admirable skill and almost infinite patience, he creates miniature figures contained in glass bottles.
Between the transparent glass, everything from sailing ships to scenes of the Cuban countryside with carts and oxen come to life. A small universes sculpted with astonishing precision.
Recently, the creator returned to his origins to participate in the emblematic event Myths of the Sea. An annual event that brings together the best of the traditions in the municipality of Antilla.
According to journalist Milagros Puig Hernández, from the Provincial Radio System in Holguin, Evaristo was an active part of the meeting. By giving a conference and presenting his literary work. Promoting a valuable exchange about the legends and customs that nourish the identity of the Holguin coast.
Seeing Evaristo Hernández Prieto hold in his hands both his written verses and his works enclosed behind glass is to confirm the value of perseverance.
In every tenth he recites and in every object meticulously assembled inside a bottle. Lies the commitment of a man who has made patience and love for his traditions an immovable beacon. Reaffirming his essential place on the cultural map of Holguin.
