With a group of health promotion activities, the Provincial Center for Attention to Diabetic Patients in the province of Holguin contributes to the prevention of diabetes, one of the main causes of death in this northeastern territory.
Blas López Rubio, director of this institution attached to the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University Teaching Hospital, told ACN that through the links with the community, the timely diagnosis of this disease, which has a high prevalence rate worldwide, mainly in the Latin American and Caribbean region, is being promoted.
He pointed out that the entity offers specialized attention to patients and their families about diet, risk factors and psychological support aimed at modifying eating habits and routines for a favorable evolution of the condition.
In addition, the expert explained that throughout the year, educational and orientation activities are carried out for vulnerable population groups, which also include primary and secondary health care institutions.
He stressed that in this aspect the family doctor and nurse have a fundamental role because they have an impact on the early detection of symptoms and the diagnosis of factors such as obesity and sedentary lifestyle.
Daniela Cedeño, a resident of the provincial capital city and daughter of a patient, expressed her gratitude for the counseling provided by the experts, which has allowed family collaboration in the management of the condition and excellent follow-up despite the limited resources available.
Diabetes is a chronic disease, characterized by a deficit in the secretion or action of insulin, which causes various complications in the kidneys, heart, retina, nerves and blood vessels, and is considered a worldwide health problem.
In Cuba there are more than 800 thousand diabetics, 43 thousand of them live in the province of Holguin, which reaffirms the importance of complying with prevention and rigorous follow-up actions adapted to each case.
