Holguin aquaculture enterprise contributes to import substitution

The substitution of imports in order to reduce the country’s expenses and benefit vulnerable population groups is a work promoted by the Unidad Empresarial de Base Acuanipe, attached to the Empresa Pesquera de Holguín (PescaHol).

Osvaldo Pérez Duerto, general director of the entity located in Mayarí, explained to the CNA that apart from the food produced, among which hamburgers, minced meat and meatballs stand out, they are in charge of supplying fish for medical diets in seven municipalities of Holguín province.

Among them are the provincial capital city, Mayarí, Moa, Cueto and Banes, which eliminates the cost of importing this item, since they obtain up to two tons of the different aquaculture species from their centers, he said.

Pérez Duerto commented that, in order to increase their production and contribute more to the population, during the year they intend to distribute 15 million hatchlings to several reservoirs such as Nipe, Biran, Bio Paso and Mayarí, and they have joined forces with the agricultural sector to promote the practice from bio-dams.

The latter has ceded, through leasing, spaces destined to fish farming which, after reaching their full development, are acquired by the company and incorporated to its exportable items and manufacturing processes, he added.

The executive said that Acuanipe’s priorities include favoring communities and institutions that serve vulnerable groups, among which are Casas de Abuelos (homes for the elderly) and neighborhoods from some municipalities such as Urbano Noris and Báguanos, which have received donations and marketed their products at reasonable prices.

The Ministry of Food Industry promotes this type of production throughout the country due to its low environmental impact and the variety of specimens and edibles derived from the extensive cultivation of cyprinids, better known as tench.
