Medical program benefits vulnerable sectors in Holguín

Stomatology services in the province of Holguin include a prioritized program for the benefit of at-risk groups as part of the strategies to guarantee universal and free medical attention to vulnerable sectors.

This specialty is one of the most affected by the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba, which limits the acquisition of supplies used in operations, extractions, fillings and other procedures.

Luis Orlando González Castro, deputy director of the General Directorate of Public Health, told ACN that the beneficiaries include pregnant women, postpartum women and children with severe disabilities, especially those of school age.

He said that strategies are being developed to follow up on these cases by specialists and to provide the highest quality coverage possible despite the limitations.

He pointed out that in the province there are 59 dental units to assist patients on a mobile basis, a practice aimed at increasing consultations in vulnerable neighborhoods and covering a larger number of the population.

He also explained that work is being done on the application of natural and traditional medicine in exodontia and in the early diagnosis of oral cancer, one of the main causes of death in the territory.

Laura García de la Cruz, who is 28 weeks pregnant and a resident of the Julio Grave de Peralta health area, praised the systematic nature of the consultations and the good treatment provided by the technicians and specialists, who have performed several procedures during her pregnancy, including the treatment of gum inflammation through the use of plants.

In 2023, more than one million people from Holguin have received medical attention in the Stomatology consultations and the training of personnel and the formation of young people are strengthened, among the fundamental objectives of the program.
