Indispensable presence of women from Holguín in Science

Every February 11 is celebrated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a date that in the province of Holguin has a special significance because more and more women are taking on roles with impact in the scientific field.

In any economic or social sphere of this eastern Cuban territory, the female labor force is present with technological contributions and innovative knowledge for local and national development.

Recently two women from Holguin were elected as new members of the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

Institutions with important contribution to science such as the University of Holguin (UHo), the University of Medical Sciences and the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias (Cirah), today are run by highly qualified and socially committed professionals from this population sector.

Likewise, most of the UHo master’s degree programs accredited for excellence are coordinated by talented and enterprising women.

Holguin women are also increasingly present in doctoral training programs in Biomedical and Health Sciences.

Likewise, their scientific contribution is vital in the Neonatology services at the Pediatric Hospital Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja.

Their research work in social sciences, gender equity and environmental care also stands out.

In Cuba, according to Citma statistics, 53 percent of science workers are women.

Proclaimed by the UN in 2015, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated this year under the slogan: Women in Science Leadership: A New Era for Sustainability.
