China rejected new sanctions imposed by the United States against individuals and entities linked to cooperation with Cuba, including two Chinese companies.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that the cooperation between Beijing and Havana is legitimate and transparent.
The spokesperson expressed China’s firm opposition to illegal, unilateral sanctions that lack any basis in international law and have not been authorized by the United Nations Security Council.
Furthermore, he rejected the so-called “long-arm jurisdiction” and Washington’s actions. Aimed at interfering with and hindering cooperation between the two countries.
Guo reiterated China’s support for Cuba’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and oppose external interference.
He emphasized that China will take all necessary measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of its companies.
These statements follow an announcement by the State Department of new sanctions against two individuals and eight entities. Including the companies China National Electronic Import and Export Company (CEIEC) and Beijing H&C Technologies.
Also the announced measures are applied under Executive Order 14404, signed by President Donald Trump on May 1st. Which allows for the imposition of restrictions on individuals and organizations that, in Washington’s view, pose a threat to U.S. national security.
Concurrently, the Department of the Treasury expanded the scope of secondary sanctions by authorizing measures against foreign nationals who operate—or have operated—within the manufacturing, technology, electronics, or maritime sectors of the Cuban economy.
During his address to the UN General Assembly on October 28th—ahead of the vote on a Cuban resolution calling for the lifting of the blockade. Which received majority support from the international community. The Foreign Minister denounced the collective punishment represented by this unilateral siege.
The blockade on fuel is tantamount to a naval blockade; “it is an act of war, an act of collective punishment, and an act of genocide. All prohibited under international law,” emphasized Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla.
Its severe consequences fall upon individuals, limit their fundamental human rights, affect third countries, and transform the essential needs of the population into instruments of political coercion, he added.
