Those who witnessed the events of that time recount that on the night of November 7th, 1965. One of the most significant milestones in Cuban public health took place. The inauguration of the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin General University Hospital. The event, attended by more than 120,000 people, fulfilled a promise made by Fidel to the people of Holguin. A promise brought to fruition through a gesture of fraternal friendship between the governments of Cuba and the then-Soviet Union.
Even the choice of its name carries historical significance, honoring the great leader of the October Socialist Revolution. An anniversary also marked on this date according to the Gregorian calendar. Sixty-one years later, the Lenin Hospital has established itself as a leading institution. Striving daily to protect the health and lives of the people of Holguin. A mission entrusted to it by the Commander-in-Chief from the moment it began operations.
As is customary each year to mark the occasion, the hospital held a scientific symposium, featuring 181 research projects. Twenty-four awards were presented, along with 8 honorable mentions, 8 “Outstanding” recognitions, and 8 “Significant” (Relevante) distinctions. Honors based on the relevance and timeliness of the topics, scientific novelty, practical application, and mastery of the subject matter.
During the anniversary ceremony, Dr. Sara Liz Ricardo Suárez, the institution’s deputy director, paid tribute to three professionals who passed away this year. They had dedicated much of their lives to the “Lenin” hospital; though no longer physically present. Their influence remains in every corner of the facility.

In the presence of the region’s top political, governmental, and health authorities, a special guest—who took the audience by surprise—was in attendance. Pura Avilés Cruz, a Hero of Labor of the Republic of Cuba. She remarked that it is a privilege to have witnessed the hospital’s inauguration. And, 61 years later, to see how it has remained among the best in the country, even through very difficult times.
“I began working here in 1964, helping to prepare for its opening. The institution has endured thanks to courageous work. Its staff has proven—even amidst complex circumstances—that it is possible to succeed, and that healthcare for the population can be guaranteed. I am proud to be here. What matters is that, 61 years later, we are still here.”
During the anniversary celebration, recognition was given to those working in strategic areas—often behind the scenes. Also who sustain this healthcare facility, including the kitchen and dining services, the laundry, general services, and the maintenance department.
Amalia Pupo Zúñiga, the director of this major institution, stated in her keynote address that it is a very special day. A time to celebrate, with pride and emotion, the 61st anniversary of the founding of the Lenin Hospital. An institution that is woven into the history, life, and heart of the people of Holguin.

These 61 years have been defined by dedication, sacrifice, commitment, and hope. Thousands of workers have left an indelible mark, contributing their knowledge and their hard work. Above all, their love for the noble task of caring for life.
“Moreover the results of our work speak for themselves.” As a testament to the collective effort and dedication of all. Our institution—in honor of the centenary of our Commander-in-Chief, Fidel Castro Ruz. It has achieved significant milestones in medical care and service to the population. Behind each of these figures lie stories, families, and lives. Above all, a team of professionals who give their absolute best to ensure the health and well-being of our people.”
Beyond its legacy as a pioneer in corneal transplants, open-abdomen surgical techniques, and the separation of the first conjoined twins. The hospital is distinguished by the number of births it has facilitated and the millions of people it has served. It houses a regional oncology center that has improved survival rates for cancer patients in eastern Cuba. A leading neonatal unit, and a regional center for the care of infertile couples—all ranked among the best in Cuba. It also features a highly regarded hemodialysis unit and the largest maternity ward in the country, where an estimated 70% of the people of Holguin were born.
Today, the Lenin Hospital represents 61 years of history, dedication, and humanism. It stands as a beacon of hope, science, and a love for life in the eastern region. Its staff—along with its various departments, operating rooms, clinics, corridors, and other spaces that have endured through time. Serve as the best proof that it remains firmly established as the healthcare giant of Holguin.
