Holguin: Press Day celebrates 50 years of the ACN

The celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Cuban News Agency (ACN) in the province of Holguin were the focus of the Press Day activities over the weekend, to be held on March 14.

A recreational meeting at Expo Holguin was the culmination of the festivities, a propitious space to share with the family and strengthen the bonds among the workers.

Germán Veloz Placencia, provincial president of the Union of Journalists of Cuba (Upec), pondered the value of this group in the formation of new generations and the excellence and professionalism in the treatment of issues of economic and social interest.

He highlighted the insertion in the experiment for the improvement of the press, which will allow the betterment of incomes and the advance towards a more integral journalism, according to the current Cuban reality.

He also highlighted the incorporation of students as a strategy for the consolidation of the staff, in addition to a necessary learning process for the development of the novices.

For her part, Claudia Laura Rodríguez Zaldívar, ACN correspondent, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to take part in high-level coverage, learn to work as part of a team and acquire the fundamental professional tools and competencies of the profession, from her third year of her Journalism degree.

The Press Day in the territory is dedicated on this occasion to the 50th anniversary of the founding of ACN and to the municipal radio station Radio Holguin and has several cultural, recreational activities, destined to abound in the local historiography, to contribute to the formation of values and to defend the maxims of the journalistic exercise.

This event commemorates the publication of the first issue of the newspaper Patria, founded by José Martí on March 14, 1892, organ of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and bastion of pro-independence journalism.
