Holguin delegation extols magnitude of World Youth Festival

The World Youth Festival in Russia -from March 1 to 7- welcomed representatives of youth NGOs, young diplomats, scientists, experts in international relations, and from other sectors, among whom were 27 Holguin citizens who left Cuba last February 26 accompanied by the decision of the Cuban people to promote peace, solidarity and defend the just causes of humanity.

Elisa Hernandez Mulet, is one of those young people from Holguin who was present at the great event in the Russian city of Sochi, and she told us a little about what happened there and the meaning that these festivals have for Cuban youth.

“In the Festival, each day was dedicated to a particular theme with the aim of contributing different aspects relevant to the youth. On each day we participated in activities, conferences, workshops and debates related to the theme of each day; with the participation of experts and of course the youth. We show once again our artistic talent, our traditions and above all our social commitment”.

The young delegate also highlighted the significance of the Festival for Cubans, as it provided the opportunity to debate with young people from all over the world, exchange experiences, learn about different cultures and, in addition, show the world once again our reality and the ideals we defend.

Providing a meeting and celebration space for young people from all over the world to discuss the issues that most affect us, as well as promoting the unity of the world’s progressive youth as a fundamental actor in the transformation of the current international order, were some of the main objectives for which the meeting was convened, he pointed out.

In the case of Cuba it also meant an opportunity to expose our essences, increase alliances, and show solidarity with other peoples in a city that was an epicenter for people from different nations.

The World Youth Festival is the largest youth event in the world and is held by decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who described it as a step “towards the formation of a fair multipolar world”.

The event hosted some 20,000 young people from all over the world, and for the first time in the history of the festival movement, teenagers aged 14 to 17 were given the opportunity to participate.
