Political, grassroots, and labor organizations in the Dominican Republic have called for a demonstration next Tuesday in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. To protest the government’s decision to request the departure of several Cuban diplomats.
Manuel Salazar, a leader of the Communist Party of Labor (PCT), stated that the protest is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. local time. In front of the Ministry building and aims to express the rejection by various sectors of a measure he described as an affront to Cuba.
He added that, so far, seven organizations are directly participating in the call. Although he explained that they are reaching out to other social, labor, and democratic movements with the goal of broadening the demonstration.
He indicated that the organizers intend for the demonstration to extend beyond groups traditionally identified with the left. To constitute a broader expression of sectors of society that reject the government’s decision.
Also the demonstration comes after the Dominican government requested on Thursday that Cuba withdraw several members of its diplomatic mission and their family members.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not disclose the names, ranks, or positions of the officials involved. He stated that, due to the nature of the diplomatic communications, it would not offer further details.
Salazar questioned the stance taken by President Luis Abinader’s administration. Also reiterated the convening organizations’ disagreement with the measure adopted against the Cuban diplomatic representation.
Earlier, the Communist Party of Cuba (PCT) described the measure as a “monumental disgrace.”
