Provincial Center for Medical Sciences Information, 54 Years of Knowledge Management

This June 25th marks a day of celebration in the history of medical sciences. As it commemorates the 54th anniversary of the founding of the Provincial Center for Medical Sciences Information (CPICM). Which became the country’s first Center for Learning and Research Resources in Health (CRAIS).

This date necessarily marks an evolution of medical knowledge in the region, a journey that began in 1972. Amidst a Cuba facing significant challenges in biomedical information management. At that time, the number of hospital libraries in all of eastern Cuba was limited to five. This is why the creation of the CPICM (Center for Scientific and Medical Research) was a necessary response in the transformation of access to scientific information. Today, this institution has grown and strengthened to the point of providing methodological guidance to 61 medical libraries in the province.

Located at the Holguin University of Medical Sciences, this center is part of the National Information Center for this branch of medicine. Its work in knowledge management is exemplary. With 31 thematic collections that include Neonatology, Oncology, and Infectious Diseases, among others. Texts on these topics constitute an essential starting point for addressing the main health problems in the province.

More than just a repository of books and information, this center is a beacon of knowledge with up-to-date texts in various specialties. Its periodicals collection comprises a broad range of serial publications. While its repository houses theses from medical specialties and master’s programs. As well as information sources that cover everything from the Social Sciences to specific areas such as Nursing and Psychology.

The CPICM also stands out for its Reference Room, designed to serve priority users and researchers. Its online catalog facilitates information retrieval, allowing healthcare professionals to easily and quickly access the informational resources necessary for their professional practice and daily work.

Since 1997, this structure has been strengthened by the journal Correo Científico Médico (Medical Scientific Mail). And over the years it has gained prestige and recognition by being indexed in databases such as SciELO and Web of Science. This achievement is no accident; it is the result of the hard work of an Editorial Committee composed of international experts who have elevated the publication’s prestige.

However, the path to excellence is ongoing. The CPICM faces the challenge of raising its impact indicators and continuing to select the scientific output of healthcare professionals. The quality and quantity of published articles are crucial aspects for maintaining its relevance in a constantly changing world.

This year, to commemorate the occasion, the Dr. Mirtha Gertrudis Santiesteban Santiesteban Provincial Awards for Medical Sciences Information were presented to Aylén Marina Guerra Cruz, Armando Salvador Escobar Rosabal, and the Information Science program at the University of Holguin. Additionally, the 26th Scientific Conference on Information Sciences was held, and Dr. Andria Torres Guerra delivered a keynote address on scientific research and its management in the age of artificial intelligence.

Whenever discussing comprehensive training and the development of information literacy skills at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The work of this center must be mentioned. Indeed, the history of the Medical Information System in Holguin cannot be told without acknowledging this center. Whose influence has been key to the development of the local health system.

In a world where information is power, the CPICM stands as a bastion of medical knowledge, committed to continuing education and quality management. Approaching its 55th anniversary in 2027, it is essential to recognize the impact and legacy of the CPICM not only in Holguin, but throughout Cuba. This institution has demonstrated that knowledge management is essential for advancing in the field of public health.
