Holguin’s Provincial Center of Medical Sciences Information promotes knowledge

This June 25 marks an important date for Public Health in Holguin: the 51st anniversary of the Provincial Center of Medical Sciences Information, an institution that arrives to this celebration with the achievement of contributing to manage the knowledge and scientific information of the sector in the territory.

Since its creation in 1972, CPICM (for its Spanish acronym) has been a solution to the critical situation existing in Cuba with biomedical information, since there were only five libraries in some hospitals of the country’s eastern region; since then on, this center has evolved till today, that provides methodological advise to 61 medical libraries.

This facility has updated texts in various areas of knowledge and specialties, a large collection of serial publications in the newspaper library.

It also has a repository of theses of specialties and master’s degrees, as well as other sources of information covering topics of Social Sciences and specialties such as Nursing, Stomatology, Psychology, Technology, among others.

It also has a reference room for the attention of priority users and researchers and an online catalog that allows the retrieval of information in the different collections held by the university library.

Located in the University of the Medical Sciences of Holguin, it is subordinated to the National Information Center of this branch. Its work in knowledge management is praiseworthy, with 31 thematic collections, among which Neonatology, Oncology, Surgery, Infectious Diseases, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Diabetes Mellitus, Tuberculosis, Medical Books and others stand out.

These are complete and updated texts on the main health problems of the province, as well as the different programs and topics prioritized in this area.

The Correo Científico Médico journal, founded in 1997, also belongs to the second group of journals, as it is indexed in recognized databases such as SciELO, SciELOCitationIndex, Web de la Ciencia, Imbiomed, Latindex, e-magazines, and others.

These outcomes are not the result of chance but thanks to the work of a group of prestigious professional members of its Editorial Committee, in this case formed by an International Committee of Experts that has achieved the publication of articles by authors from other provinces and countries, and demonstrate the prestige acquired by the journal.

However, it is a constant challenge to raise its impact indicators and to continue the selection of the scientific production of health professionals, with a growing increase in the quality and quantity of published articles.

Another of the great achievements of the CPICM lies in its contribution to comprehensive training and the development of informational competencies in undergraduate and graduate programs. Thus, today it is impossible to speak of the beginnings of the Medical Information System in the territory without linking it to the Provincial Center for Medical Sciences Information, since its work in the development of the health system in the territory is undeniable.
