World Allergy Week: A Call to Action

With World Allergy Week upon us, it’s worth reflecting on this increasingly common condition. Which can change the lives of millions of people globally.

This international campaign runs until June 27th to focus attention on the real impact of allergic conditions. In a world where we breathe increasingly more pollution, educating and preventing this condition is not optional; it’s a necessity. Today, allergies don’t just affect the most vulnerable, as was once believed. Between 25 and 30 percent of the world’s population is affected. With a marked upward trend due to climate change, pollution, and unhealthy lifestyles.

In Cuba, it is estimated that more than two million people live with some type of allergy, representing almost 20 percent of the population. And in Holguin, as in most provinces, rhinitis, asthma, and dermatitis are becoming increasingly prevalent. The immune system, which normally acts as a kind of guardian, goes haywire and attacks harmless substances as if they were invaders.

Pollen, which goes unnoticed by many, is a threat to allergy sufferers. Triggering sneezing, itchy eyes, congestion, or even hives. Especially during spring when allergens are at their peak.

Allergy symptoms don’t give polite warning: a series of sneezes, a persistent cough, burning skin. In the most severe cases, difficulty breathing that can lead to seeking medical help.

The worrying thing is how climate change is lengthening pollen seasons and worsening these conditions. Resulting in a growing demand for consultations for respiratory allergies.

Dust, mites, certain foods, and even the infamous “Saharan dust” that reaches Cuba all play a role. Many people live with these symptoms without knowing it’s an allergy. And end up self-medicating which only complicates the situation.

What few people know is that allergies can appear at any age, not just in children. For example, an adult who has never had problems can wake up one day with allergic rhinitis because their environment has changed. That’s why personalized diagnosis and treatment are so important for each individual case. As they can significantly improve quality of life.

Among the most effective actions are identifying triggers. Keeping the house clean and well-ventilated, and avoiding self-medication. In this regard, allergy specialists and family doctors play a vital role in the care and management of allergy sufferers.

This World Allergy Week is a good time to stop viewing allergies as something minor and to get informed, take preventative measures, and act promptly.
