The limitations in the studies of carbon to archeological pieces stand out among the affectations of the commercial and financial economic blockade of the United States against Cuba to that branch of science in the province of Holguin.
These analyses are necessary in the diggings to determine the origin and authenticity of each sample as well as in the investigations and other aspects within the line itself.
Lourdes del Rosario Perez Iglesias, specialist of the Central Eastern Department of Archaeology, based in this city, told ACN that at present there is no high-tech equipment required for these tests, which delays the achievement of results.
The tests carried out so far, said the expert, have been through collaboration with foreign universities that have the technology but do not have enough samples.
She said that the findings made in Holguin are of interest for the study of numerous scientific centers due to their variety and representativeness in elements such as the Indo-Hispanic contact and other similar customs and traditions in the Caribbean area.
Even with these limitations, progress has been made through scientific projects, which in the last five years have made it possible to determine food habits, materials for making ornaments and agricultural techniques acquired from the Spanish colonizers, he said.
The genocidal policy also limits the improvement and access to doctoral and postgraduate training programs for specialists in this department, which are based on research and thematic lines of U.S. universities.
The negative impact of the blockade on the Cuban economy amounts to some five billion dollars a year and affects health, education, transportation, communications, agriculture, science and technological innovation, among other sectors.
Imposed since 1961, the hostile policy limits the direct trade of inputs, spare parts, machinery and other components manufactured in the United States or by U.S. companies, which forces Cuba to obtain them through third countries, with considerable financial losses for transportation.
