Rower Ana Laura Jiménez and judoka Marlon Herrera are the only athletes from Holguin to have won titles at the Central American and Caribbean Games. Which are being held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, until August 8th.
To date, representatives from the province of Holguin have won eleven medals: two gold, five silver, and four bronze. Fourteen athletes still have to compete or finish their events.
Ana Laura, from the municipality of Mayari, won a gold medal in the mixed eight-sculls event. Silver medals in the coxless four and women’s four-sculls, and a bronze medal in the double sculls.
In Marlon’s case, he won the gold medal in the individual 73-kilogram event. With a sensational ippon in the title match just nine seconds into the bout against Mexican Ulises Méndez. He later won bronze with the mixed team.
The other silver medals were won by taekwondo athletes Elianet Crespo (Moa, +73 kg), Marlyn Pérez (Holguin municipality, 53 kg). And Tamara Robles (Sagua de Tanamo, 57 kg).
Andrea Fuentes (rhythmic gymnastics), also from the provincial capital, reached the podium. With two bronze medals in the five-ball and three-hoop/two-club group events.
Cyclist Evelín Díaz finished fourth in the women’s team pursuit and will return to action on Saturday, August 1st, in the road race.
