Youth in Holguin Promote Holistic Health and Prevention

With the aim of strengthening self-care and health prevention from an early age. The “Youth for Life” Network organized a series of educational activities at the Juan José Fornet Piña junior high school in the municipality of Holguin.

The event, supported by specialists from the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Unit (PROSALUD) and education officials. Focused on key areas for the student community’s development: adolescent pregnancy prevention, self-care, self-esteem, and holistic health for young people.

Moreover the event was not merely an information session but a space for active exchange where the students themselves took the lead. Notably, the gathering featured the enthusiastic participation of two peer promoters from the school itself, who became the driving force behind the activities.

Their involvement exemplifies the principle that young people are the best agents of change for their peers. Fostering a close and effective dialogue that goes beyond the traditional specialist-recipient relationship.

Behind this initiative is PROSALUD, the governing institution under Cuba’s Ministry of Public Health. Established in January 2014, it not only designs national communication and intervention strategies. But also coordinates its work across all regions. Collaborating closely with polyclinics, schools, and community networks.

Its mission to foster healthy lifestyles and raise awareness of risks is realized through concrete actions. Such as the one held at this school where a community-based, human-centered approach is key.

The presence of municipal and provincial specialists, alongside education officials. It underscores the importance of intersectoral collaboration in addressing complex issues like adolescent pregnancy and mental health.

By combining PROSALUD’s technical expertise with the emerging leadership of the Youth for Life Network, a strategy is solidified that not only informs. But also empowers young people to make responsible decisions regarding their well-being. The event concluded with a renewed commitment to continue building support networks for the well-being of the entire community.
