This Tuesday, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will once again conduct its annual review of the resolution. Demanding an end to the United States’ blockade against Cuba.
The United Nations’ primary deliberative body will debate and vote on the resolution. Based on a report presented by Cuba regarding the need to end this policy of strangulation. A policy that has intensified to unprecedented levels since the arrival of the Donald Trump administration in January 2025.
“Our reality is profoundly marked by the unjust economic, commercial, and financial blockade. Which has a devastating impact on our economy and is, without a doubt, the primary obstacle to our development.
Furthermore, it constitutes a massive, flagrant, and systematic violation of the human rights of an entire people.” Stated Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Anayansi Rodríguez. A member of the delegation led by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez to Prensa Latina.
For his part, Permanent Representative Ambassador Ernesto Soberón noted that “Cuba arrives at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) with the legitimacy of a just demand. One maintained for decades and backed by broad international support.”
The diplomat asserted that the Caribbean nation is not a threat; the blockade is. In the face of blackmail and arrogance, he emphasized. Also the international community will once again choose truth, dignity, and international solidarity.
He warned that this year’s vote will take place in an especially grave context. Marked by an unprecedented intensification of the policy of collective punishment against Cuba. Including an energy blockade and the imposition of secondary sanctions on third countries.
Added to this, he noted, is an “unprecedented offensive by the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Permanent Mission to the United Nations (USUN), and U.S. embassies around the world. All aimed at undermining the sovereign will of member states and weakening the traditional levels of support for our resolution.”
Moreover the debate taking place this Tuesday and Wednesday “will transcend the scope of bilateral relations between Cuba and the United States. It is an issue of interest to the General Assembly one that has been on its agenda for over 30 years. It draws high levels of participation and broad regional representation,” Soberón pointed out.
The human dimension of this ongoing aggression by the United States cannot be concealed, the representative of the Caribbean nation to the multilateral body indicated.
“Prolonged blackouts, difficulties in accessing medicine, food, and clean drinking water. The adverse impacts to health services demonstrate the impact of a genocidal policy that punishes the entire population,” he emphasized.
Last year, the resolution received 165 votes in favor, seven against (Argentina, the United States, Hungary, Israel, North Macedonia, Paraguay, and Ukraine), and 12 abstentions (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Costa Rica, Czechia, Ecuador, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Morocco, Moldova, Romania, and Poland).
More than thirty speakers are set to take the floor on the first day of the debate. The vote will take place tomorrow. For the thirty-fourth time, the General Assembly will call for an end to this collective punishment. A unilateral imposition that Cuba has denounced since 1992.
