Cuba is not a threat; the blockade imposed by the United States is. In the face of blackmail and arrogance, the international community will once again choose truth, dignity, and international solidarity, stated Ambassador Ernesto Soberón.
Also Cuba’s Permanent Representative to the UN told Prensa Latina that on October 27th and 28th, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will conduct its annual review of the Cuban resolution. Calling for an end to this unilateral siege.
Cuba approaches the UNGA with the legitimacy of a just demand. One maintained for decades and backed by broad international support the diplomat said. Adding that they will defend their position “with irrefutable examples of the extensive and painful harm that the blockade inflicts upon the Cuban people.”
This year, he warned, the vote will take place in an especially grave context. Marked by an unprecedented intensification of a policy of collective punishment against Cuba. Including an energy blockade and secondary sanctions against third countries.
Compounding this situation, he noted, is “an unprecedented offensive by the State Department, the U.S. Mission to the United Nations (USUN), and U.S. embassies around the world. All aimed at altering the sovereign will of member states and weakening the traditional levels of support for our resolution.”
He emphasized that “in a year when the severe effects of the blockade are impossible to hide, the U.S. government has engaged in intense diplomatic maneuvering. Including direct pressure from the Secretary of State, threats of sanctions, and potential economic or political retaliation against countries across the globe.”
“This has been complemented,” he emphasized, “by an aggressive diplomatic campaign led by the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, and his team of political operatives. In their eagerness to divert attention from the overwhelming international rejection of the blockade. They organized a deceitful, overtly anti-Cuban event at the United Nations headquarters on October 19th.”
He recalled that “in its zeal to attack Cuba, the United States brought common criminals. As well as an individual included on the Cuban list of persons and entities wanted for terrorist activities into the United Nations. In violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1373 (2001).”
The Cuban ambassador warned that Washington’s objective is to pressure countries that have historically opposed the blockade. On the grounds that it violates international law to change their votes, abstain, or even absent themselves from the proceedings. “They are attempting to force a shift in long-standing positions at gunpoint,” he said.
“Also the fear within circles close to the Secretary of State is so profound,” he noted. “That the Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Juan Pablo Segura, has launched a politically motivated social media campaign. Aimed at undermining and discrediting the achievements of the Revolution.”
He added that all of this is part of a long-standing, unfulfilled ambition—shared by dozens of U.S. administrations. To force a change in Cuba’s political, economic, and social system.
“This shameful conduct exposes the paradox of those who claim to be defenders of the international order. Yet resort to blackmail, harassment, and intimidation to impose their own agenda of domination over Cuba,” Soberón insisted, predicting yet another defeat for the United States.
Moreover the debate taking place at the UN headquarters in New York this Tuesday and Wednesday “will transcend the level of bilateral relations between Cuba and the United States. As it concerns an issue of interest to the General Assembly. One that has been on its agenda for over 30 years. It draws high levels of participation and broad regional representation,” he said.
Furthermore, he noted, what is “at stake” includes “respect for the sovereign equality of states, freedom of trade and navigation, non-interference, and the continued validity and relevance of the United Nations Charter.”
The human dimension of this ongoing aggression by the United States cannot be hidden. Indicated the representative of the Caribbean nation to the multilateral body.
“Prolonged blackouts, difficulties in accessing medicine, food, and drinking water. And the disruption of healthcare services all demonstrate the impact of a genocidal policy that punishes the entire population,” he asserted.
“There is not a single aspect of the daily lives of Cubans that is not affected by the consequences of the blockade. The blockade violates the human rights of all Cubans. It hinders national development, and jeopardizes Cuba’s ability to meet its international commitments. Including the Sustainable Development Goals,” the ambassador stated.
“In the face of this reality, and the repeated and dangerous threats from the President of the United States and his Secretary of State to use force against our country. Cuba reaffirms its status as a nation of peace, committed to independence, sovereignty, and the peaceful resolution of disputes,” it declared.
Last year, the vote on the Cuban resolution titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”. Which took place for the thirty-third time, was adopted with 165 votes in favor, seven against, and 12 abstentions.
