The Holguin Provincial Center for Visual Arts opens its doors this Friday, September 11th. To host the solo exhibition “Palimpsestos, Orikis, Odunes, Mitomorfos” (Palimpsests, Orikis, Odunes, Mythomorphs). A well-deserved tribute to the distinguished artist Jorge Hidalgo Pimentel on the occasion of his 85th birthday.
The exhibition, which will occupy both the Main Hall and the Temporary Exhibition Hall of this prestigious institution. It offers a chance to reconnect with the aesthetic universe of one of the most prolific and multidisciplinary masters of contemporary Cuban visual art.
Born in Santiago de Cuba on September 6th, 1941, but having made the “City of Parks” (Holguin) his home by choice. Hidalgo Pimentel has built a body of work that masterfully spans painting, drawing, woodcut printing, graphic design, poetry, and journalism.
His artistic vision is distinguished by a deeply Cuban character. Also where contemporary experimentation coexists with a rigorous study of indigenous Mesoamerican and Caribbean cultures. As well as Afro-Cuban magico-religious systems.
This devotion to his roots has earned him critical acclaim for his technical mastery of printmaking. Also for a visual narrative that engages in a dialogue between the divine and the earthly.
Beyond his own artistic output, Jorge Hidalgo’s influence stands as a fundamental pillar of the cultural fabric of both Holguin and the nation.
Among his many contributions, he is notable for having founded emblematic events and institutions. Such as the *Pilgramage of May*, the Ibero-American Culture Festival, the Holguin Culture Weeks, the Printmaking Workshop, the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS), and the provincial edition of the *Boleros de Oro* National Festival. He also presided over the Holguin branch of UNEAC. During one of its periods of greatest creative flourishing and directed the historic magazine *Jigüe*.
Recognized as a “Master of Masters” by the Pedagogical University and the recipient of prestigious honors. Such as the Order for National Culture, the Holguin Axe, and the Provincial Shield. Hidalgo Pimentel has maintained an enviable creative vitality.
This Friday’s event invites the artistic community and the people of Holguin to celebrate the living legacy of an essential creator. Whose work continues to expand across the island’s cultural landscape.
