The Cuban women’s volleyball team will seek a World Championship berth today when they face Mexico in the quarterfinals of the NORCECA Continental Championship. Held at the Ricardo Gioriver Arias Volleyball Palace in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The Cubans advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Costa Rica 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-6) on Sunday. A result that secured them second place in Group B of the Dominican tournament with a record of two wins and one loss. The Costa Ricans will have to fight for fifth through eighth place.
According to the tournament’s collective statistics, the Cuban team outperformed Costa Rica in attack (33 points to 11), blocking (9-1), and serving (9-0). They also committed 12 fewer errors than their opponents (12-24).
Individually, Cuban Claudia Tarín stood out as the match’s top scorer with 13 points, supported by Whitney James with 12.
Cuban head coach Luizomar De Moura, from Brazil, explained after the match, “We played with great responsibility and never underestimated Costa Rica despite the difference in level. We gave it our all on the court and put into practice everything we had worked on in training. I am very happy to have advanced to the quarterfinals.”
For his part, Ciro Zoratti, Costa Rica’s coach, stated, “We didn’t play a good match; it wasn’t the same as our previous two matches.” Cuba gave it their all on the court, and I take that as a sign of respect because they didn’t let up against us. They treated us like any other opponent, and when Cuba plays at this level, it’s impossible for us to compete.
