Premature baby Leilanis Rojas de la Cruz is progressing favorably at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University Teaching Hospital in Holguin. After being born before 40 weeks of gestation.
Ana Nastia Tamayo Ortiz, head of the neonatology service at that medical institution, told the Cuban News Agency (CNA) that the patient has good reflexes and is able to suckle. She has been in skin-to-skin contact with her mother for several days. A service designed to allow premature newborns to have direct contact with their mothers.
She emphasized that the baby is being monitored by a multidisciplinary team of experts and is receiving the necessary medical care. She indicated that the monitoring focuses on the constant examination of vital organs. Such as the heart and lungs, as well as rehabilitation and psychological support for the family.
Daniela de la Cruz Llorente, the baby girl’s mother, thanked the medical team for their care. And efforts in stabilizing her daughter and ensuring a favorable prognosis.
The skin-to-skin contact program at the Lenin Hospital in Holguin benefits premature infants. Also who are admitted after being in intensive care and once they are able to feed independently with breast milk.
According to the protocol, once they reach 2,500 grams in weight, they are transferred to the maternity ward of the hospital. Where they receive constant monitoring until their discharge into the community.
