Cuba Secures Place in World Volleyball Elite

Cuba defeated Canada 3-0 today in the third week of the Men’s Volleyball Nations League. Securing its place among the world’s elite with authority.

In a tense match with lightning-fast serves, the team coached by Jesús Cruz dismantled the North Americans. With scores of 25-22, 25-21, and a thrilling 29-27 that sealed the victory.

The Caribbean team grew from a balanced first set to impose its will in attack and blocking. While in the third set, it withstood the opponent’s onslaught in the decisive points.

Also the statistics tell a story of dominance with 11 blocks to six, five aces to two, and a more solid reception. In addition to 42 attack points to 40—a small difference in numbers but a significant one in terms of performance.

Miguel Ángel López led the offense with 16 points, followed by Marlon Yant with 14. For Canada, Ryan Varga stood out with 15 points and Brodie Szwarc with 11. But their efforts weren’t enough against the Cuban onslaught.

The victory propelled Cuba to 15th place in the FIVB rankings and left Canada in 16th, a symbolic shift in a direct battle. The other and final match for Cruz’s team will be this Sunday against Italy, the current world champions.

The Men’s Volleyball Nations League finals are scheduled to take place in Ningbo, China, from July 29th to August 2nd. In this edition of the VNL, the Cubans will not have to face Germany, Brazil, Bulgaria, Japan, or Turkey.

With their place in the competition secured, the Cuban squad will face Italy in their final preliminary match. With the opportunity to close out the week in Japan with another convincing performance.
