Holguin Prioritizes Reproductive and Sexual Health

Through family planning consultations, the General Directorate of Health in the province of Holguin prioritizes women’s reproductive and sexual health. One of the main programs benefiting women in Cuba.

Daisy Maritza San José Pérez, a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics, explained to CNA that these clinics are located throughout the 14 municipalities. Specifically in the 42 health areas of the eastern province.

She specified that, as part of these programs, a multidisciplinary team comprised of a gynecologist/obstetrician, a social worker, and a psychologist provides support. Guidance on the use of contraceptives, and identifies the main preconception risks.

The specialist explained that consultations integrate care for the family environment, mental health, and sexual health. Through educational materials on the use of intrauterine devices, tablets, subdermal implants, and other methods.

She added that the consultations also provide special attention to the prevention of sexually transmitted infections. And complications associated with reproductive health.

Another focus of these consultations, the specialist indicated, is the modification of risk factors by managing conditions. Such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Which are among the leading causes of morbidity during pregnancy.

The official stated that this approach offers the opportunity to achieve a successful pregnancy once the underlying chronic condition is controlled. Guaranteeing the health of both mother and child.

As part of family planning, educational talks, distribution of brochures, and provision of contraceptives are offered. These are essential for guiding vulnerable groups. Such as adolescents, with the goal of preventing early pregnancy.

Cuba provides these services to women and families free of charge. Despite the difficult economic conditions the country is facing, where the health sector is one of the hardest hit. This demonstrates the government’s commitment to increasing birth rates and protecting life.
