The CreLab 2026 Circular Hackathon concluded in Holguin

The first edition of the CreLab 2026 Circular Hackathon concluded with awards given to six young students. For three innovative, sustainable, and technological solutions applicable to the construction materials sector.

Organized by the University of Holguin (UHo) and the Construction Materials Company (Medano). The competition brought together students of Civil, Mechanical, Computer, and Industrial Engineering. Also who presented projects aimed at improving the sector’s productivity, management, and logistics. Yudelkis Salcedo Fernández, the company’s technical and development director, told the Cuban News Agency (CNA).

In a complex context for the manufacture of supplies, the proposals had to address aspects of the circular economy, territorial environmental management, and export promotion. Criteria that were evaluated among the six participating multidisciplinary teams.

The first edition of the Circular Hackathon CreLab 2026 in Holguin awarded the top prize to Carlos Barnés Infante and Raúl Sánchez Montero. Students of Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering, respectively. For Aigis, an intelligent system for managing business processes and resource planning, explained the organizers.

Aigis integrates a digital market study using sentiment analysis on social media and websites to predict prices. As well as automatically assessing the reuse potential of waste and surplus products, they noted.

Other winning initiatives included Medano Circular, a platform that transforms waste into resources using artificial intelligence and geolocation. A semi-industrial ecosystem design focused on the production of quicklime for Zero Cement mortar (Cerocem), manufactured by the Holguin-based company.

At the first edition of the Circular CreLab 2026 Hackathon, Salcedo Fernández commented that the selection of winners considered the originality, feasibility of implementation. Sustainable impact, and interdisciplinarity of the proposals. As their results can be used to improve the functioning of industry.

She added that the event strengthened the link between academia and industry and constituted a collaborative space. That demonstrates the potential of multidisciplinary work in addressing territorial problems.

The competition was co-sponsored by the Holguin Scientific and Technological Industrial Park and supported by the international InnoLabs project. Which promotes innovation and entrepreneurship laboratories in higher education in Ecuador and Cuba.

On the island, InnoLabs is represented by the Technological University of Havana (Cujae), the University of Cienfuegos, and the University of  Holguin (UHo). Institutions that promote technology transfer, strengthen entrepreneurial skills, and improve students’ job placement.
